HOW COULD SHE do that—just be just friends with him?

She was running so hard she didn’t even turn and exclaim to him about the snow. Instead, she made footprints in it down the steps and onto the path leading to the bathroom, all the time thinking about his hands on her and the taste of his mouth.

In Texas, snow was always cause for excitement. In Montana, snow would have to take a number and get in line.

Why had she let Jake pull her into his bed?

She’d never been daring, never been a risk-taker. Growing up, she’d always been just a bit shy, sort of an observer of life because her mother wasn’t there to explain it to her.

And because she’d wanted to please Daddy every minute.

Grown-up, she’d been so good at pleasing other people and hiding her real feelings that finally she hadn’t known what they were. She’d had the facade down to ultimate perfection: Southern woman with perfect manners and unfailing charm in every social situation.

But somehow, with Jake, that was all gone.

Because she’d spent such a long time working on his gorgeous, broad-shouldered, muscular back that tapered down to his slim waist? Her fingertips touching his naked skin?

Or because she’d sat so long with her thighs pressed against his hard ones, the muscles flexing under his tight jeans?

She skidded a little on the icy walk and had to flail her arms to catch herself, but that didn’t distract her. It must’ve been that that contact with Jake had made her body want more.

Simple lust. That was her problem. Jake brought it out in her.

No big deal. She just wasn’t accustomed to letting her body tell her what to do. But gurus and therapists and counselors were always saying people should listen to their bodies.

Even so, she and Jake were going to be friends only. That was all settled now.

Breathing in air so cold and fresh it made her lungs feel raw, she rushed into the incredibly cold bathroom, then back out into the morning sunlight. It would help warm some by noon, but not much. Even the sun was colder up here.

Despite all that, she was still melted at the core of her, still heating in her blood when she thought of Jake’s hands on her. She ought to throw herself full length into the snow and make a snow angel to cool off.

Letting him pull her into his bed tied leaving Brock as the most daring thing she’d ever done. She’d gone from zero to sixty on the risk-taking scale in only a few months. But that was the end of it. Running around all over the wilderness and catching Ariel would be enough risk for a while.

It had been foolish, but she’d really been living in the moment. Somehow she knew that she’d have the vivid memory of Jake until she died.

The horses were outside the lean-to shed, standing in the sun. Freckles threw up his head and whinnied at her. Jake’s horse, the bay colt he’d ridden over to her house that day, joined in.
